Hedychium spicatum

A member of the Ginger family, Hedychium spicatum grows and flowers at relatively cool elevations in our hills. This photograph was taken outside of Darjeeling town, growing among other shrubs on a steep bank by the roadside. Flowers on opening are white and fade to yellow in a couple of days. In winter the stems die off and the rhizomes remain dormant.
