Paris polyphylla A rhizomatic plant of cool growing mountain regions this is a favourite with those interested in alpines. Dormant in winter when the rhizomes remain embedded in its cozy humus and forest litter environment Strong rhizomes produce a stem to about 2ft tall and more in late spring and this culminates in a whorl of leaves and above this whorl the flower opens. Seed pods ripen in early winter and these split open to reveal brilliant red seeds. Habitat: Through the Himalayas from Northwest India to China Ethnobotany: Rhizomes posses medicinal properties |
