Hedychium greenei This is probably the most colourful among the large flowered Hedychium species. Plants grow up to about 5ft tall and are not deciduous in winter. Stems are a deep red-brown colour and the underside of the leaves are maroon coloured. We have seen it growing and flowering happily in the cold climate of Darjeeling. Flowers are a brilliant orange-red with a large showy lip. After flowering is over, numerous plantlets develop from within the bracts. These can be removed when they grow larger and planted out. Grows best in a rich humus compost. Habitat: Literature refers to it's habitat as Bhutan and Sikkim but wedo not know anyone who has seen this plant in the wild in these areas. Ethnobotany: Not known | |
